HHandicap system for SBS Golf Society;
In keeping with the tradition of Golf housekeeping and in order to reflect our members golfing ability, the following system has been devised to ensure that everyone has a fairer chance of competing against each other. THE SOCIETY WILL USE a SLOPE INDEX AS INTRODUCED IN 2021. This slope index will be 113. Therefore there will effectively be no Slope index applied for the Society
These rules follow the guidelines set out for most Golf Societies and golf club handicap systems.
The handicaps have been changed in accordance with the current handicap system, using historic data, from the last 5 competions, that a player has been involved with. Every player without a club handicap will be fully assesed and allowed, for this time only to exceed the maximum rise in allowed.
The average of the tournaments, for a player was taken from the data and used to form the new handicap, if there was a change.
- A member shall not receive a higher handicap, than their official WORLD club handicap, he The only exception to this is where they are increeased, by the committee due to consistently low scores at one of the two season washup systems (see below)
- In 2013/14 season (started September 2013) the maximum handicap allowed was 28 providing records show that this is correct, or the player has a true club handicap. This was increased to 36 max in July 2019. Following 2024 Washup after South Stafs Open this was increased to 40
- For new
comers a maximum of 24 will be allowed unless they have a Club World handicap. They will be allowed to increase or
decrease in line with the handicap system.
- The par for a course shall be 36 stableford points (if playing full handicap)
This is the usual standard scratch for the day (this can
alter, depending on weather, difficulty of course etc (See below for
alteration of scratch)
Eg: When playing 7/8 handicap a 12 handicapper receives 11 shots (7/8 of 12)
If this player scores 35 points from those 11 shots it shall be deemed that they would have scored 36 points off full handicap
5 From 2011 season, only the winner of a competition will be cut, fully. For every point over The standard scratch (Gross) for the day points (gross) the player will be docked 0.3 (per point) from their handicap in future.
6 The other players finishing under the standard scratch (Gross) will be docked 0.1 only per Point, up to a maximum 0.5 per tournament
7 For every score under 36 points (gross) the player will receive 0.2 (per shot) to their Handicap, but to a maximum increase of 1 shot per tournament
8 These handicaps will run infinitum.
9 It is likely that some courses will be more difficult than others and lower scores will be returned. This would mean lower handicap cuts for bandits etc.
At the end of each tournament the standard scratch for
the day, will be worked out and the
par for the day altered up or down accordingly.
Following the 2025 Washup after the 2025 Masters at Bewdley Pines the scores (grossed up) for the lowest 7 handicappers will be used will be used to determine the Standard scratch for the day. The two poorest scores from from these 7 lowest handicappers, will be discarded and the other 5 players scores (grossed up) will be used
The scores (grossed up) for the 5 lowest fhandicappers will be added together and divided by 5. This score will decide the Standard Scratch for the day. If this total is not exact, then grossing up or down usung handicap rules will be used (eg 29.5 becomes 30 but 29.4 would be 29)
The minimum score that
will be accepted from these 5 lowest handicappers (gross) will be 22
points, so if one of them score 20 gross, this will be rounded up to
22. This rule came in during October 2021
Note - It may be that there may be more than 5 lowest handicappers if say, there are two or more players off same handicaps. If this happens, the higest score out of the two/three will be used
All of the lowest handicappers must complete the round for them to register for the scratch. If they don't then the next lowest handicapper card counts towards the scratch calculations
NOTE There are no handicap cuts or increases for THE PLAYERS TOURNAMENT with the exception of the Winner who will be cut 0.3 for every shot over The standard scratch as that tournament is a full handicap affair. THE PLAYERS TOURNAMENT IS A FULL HANICAP AFFIAR
End of season review (Washup)
At
the end of every season (after the Open in July and now after the
Masters introduced by the committee in July 2024) a review of
Society players will be made to ensure they have a correct handicap.
This only applies to players who are consistently not scoring well
enough, and possibly dragging the standard scratch down after each
tournament. In other words players who are consistently playing well
below the Gross Standard Scratch.
It was decided by the committee after the 2024 Open Washup, that two Washups would take place. One after the Masters and One after the Open.
Note. If a player has won a tournament within the last 5 times they have played, they cannot be considered for the washup procedure
| Assessement Rule 1. Consistency to qualify for re-asesment shall mean a player must have appeared at least three times during the last ten competitions (including The Players tournament) and not have played within 5 shots of the GROSS Standard scratch 50% of the times they appeared. |
| Assessment Rule 2 The consistency for the player will be worked out from the players score, from at least 5 of thier last performances in the last 10 comps. this will then be compared to the average STANDARD SCRATCH GROSS points from the last 10 competitions |
| Assessment Rule 3 The GROSS points for last FIVE competitions the player competed in, will then be averaged out and used to arrive at the average score for that player, to be used for possible increase in handicap. If a player has only played three or four times within the last ten competitions because of injury, the average of their GROSS points in those competions can be used to arrive at an average. Otherwise they must have played at least 5 times fo consideration |
| Assesment Rule 4 If a player is consistently not within 5 shots (gross) than the standard scratch average, for the tournaments they have played in, then they will be re-assessed, up to a maximum of 3 shots, using the handicap system. The increase will be 0.3 per shot for every point GROSS behind the GROSS AVERAGE standard scratch from the last ten competitions. (See point 2 above) |
| Assessment Rule 5 This can apply to Society members who do have a handicap at their own club |
| Assessment Rule 6 Once a member with a club handicap at their own club hands in a card there, the SBS organisers must be advised to ensure the Society handicap is still appropriate. (Remember, once a card is handed in (after the re-assessment period) at a players own club, if it is lower than the Society handicap, the SBS handicap will be reduced to that. |

Gross always = 36 if playing to standard. Only the winner of the Players gets cut but in all The Majors competitions all players will be affected also
So the winner gets cut 0.3 per shot over 29 points gross Every other player over 29 gets cut 0.1 shot per point over, to a maximum of 0.5. Every player under 29 points gets increase of 0.2 per point up to a maximum 1 shot
Note- Only the winner of the Players Championship, not the other players gets cut as this is a full handicap affair. All players playing the other tournaments will be subject to a cut or increase
