In
essence cups were not awarded at the Open or Classic Majors although
these two tournaments started in 1994 and 1996 respectively.
The first trophy or cup, to be awarded was the SBS Masters Shield in 1997 and until 2006 when Craig Downes won the tournament, for the third time this was awarded year on year. However, as a joke before the 2006 Masters Alan Newell promised that if Craig won for the 3rd time he got to keep it, for ever, like the football World cup.
When he
did win it Alan had to arrange for
a cup
to be awarded in future and paid for all previous winners to be
emblazoned on it.
In future no one gets to keep cups, for this reason although they do get to take them home.
A trophy of a golfer swinging a club was awarded at Little Lakes to Alan Newell for the Invitational in 1998.
For some
unknown reason, the club bit,
went
missing before the 2002 Invitational and Ricky Muddimer
was awarded the Trophy club less.
Every
winner of the Invitational is
engraved on
the base.
In 1999 shortly after Stuart Hayward died the Classic received its cup, when the Society members clubbed together to buy the Stuart Hayward cup, which was first won by Steve Crowe. Again Little Lakes hosted the tournament.
The
Classic had been running since 1996
and
therefore the first 3 winners were not engraved on it.
The final cup was for the Open. In 2000
the Management of the
Staffordshire
Building Society sanctioned the purchase of the cup, to be awarded at
The Shropshire. Paul Chafer won it but every previous
winner of the Open was also engraved.
